Search for HKUST Big Data Institute (BDI) Director

The University is inviting applications and nominations for the position of Director of the HKUST Big Data Institute.


The University

The Institute


The HKUST Big Data Institute (BDI) is a cross-campus Institute that supports faculty and students working on Big Data and Data Science at HKUST and HKUST (Guangzhou). BDI strives to provide strong leadership role in Big Data and Data Science research in Hong Kong and globally by establishing renowned education programs, coordinating and developing cross-institutional and cross-departmental research projects, and actively engaging in community outreach. BDI has three primary missions:

1. To engage in emerging Big Data cross-disciplinary research that will have a long-term, transformative effect on Hong Kong and nation's Big Data applications;

2. To develop technologies, policies, and educational programs that have the potential for offering high-impact solutions to pressing near-term Big Data related issues; and

3. To focus on developing a Big Data platform to transfer technology developed for Big Data extraction, integration, management, mining and visualization to real products.


The Role


The appointee will report to the Vice-President for Research and Development of HKUST and the Vice-President for Research of HKUST (Guangzhou). The appointee is expected to provide leadership for the cross-campus Institute and manage its diverse research and educational functions for HKUST and HKUST (Guangzhou). The appointee will lead the development of educational programs in Big Data and Data Science, oversee the promotion of research initiatives and projects in Big Data and Data Science in relation to the industrial and economic development of the region, and foster the recruitment of core faculty and staff in Big Data and Data Science related systems.



Terms & Applications / Nominations


The appointment will be concurrent with a substantive professorial appointment with the academic department(s). The initial term of directorship will be 3 years, renewable upon mutual agreement. Competitive remuneration and generous fringe benefits, including housing where appropriate, will be provided.


Applications/nominations for the position are invited from well-qualified and accomplished scholars. In addition to reputable academic qualifications, extensive teaching and research experience, the appointee must have demonstrated capability to provide strong leadership at the tertiary level. Proven capacity to interact effectively with government authorities, industry and commercial sectors would be advantageous.
