BDI hosts a pre-competition visit for OGCIOSome 80 Secondary 5 and 6 students talented on IT led by Cyberport and the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) in Hong Kong visited the Big Data Institute (BDI) and its WeChat-HKUST Joint Lab on Artificial Intelligence Technology (WHAT Lab) in the afternoon of 9 September 2017.
These students, mostly from senior IT Class of OGCIO’s partner schools of the Enriched IT Programme (EITP) who are winners of international and local IT competitions, are participants of the “Chinese Chess Challenge – 1K vs AI” to be held on 27 October later of the year. This visit was part of the second pre-battle day activity known as “AI Knowledge Enlightening Tour”. These pre-event activities, to be held during August to mid-October, targeted to give students the opportunities to appreciate the technology development of AI by our academia and industry, while the Challenge itself hopes to arise their interest on AI in general.
The visiting group first toured around WHAT Lab-cum-BDI Lab in the Cheng Yu Tung building for half an hour from 2:30pm, then moved on to Lecture Theatre K to attend two talks by Prof Xiaojuan Ma on “How Emotional Intelligence Quotient can be Trained in Robots” and BDI Director Prof Qiang Yang on “Artificial Intelligence in the Futuristic World”.
Just prior to the commencement of the insightful talks, Prof Tim Kwang-ting Cheng, Dean of Engineering at HKUST, gave the welcoming remarks to the visiting group, and received a Certificate of Appreciation from Dr. Toa Ka-ieong Charm, Chief Public Mission Officer of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Co Ltd, for the support offered from the School of Engineering and BDI.
